Welcome to the Maiden Voyage of The Universal Messenger

Dear Readers: Hello and welcome to the first issue of the Universal Messenger! We have been quite fortunate for our first issue in attracting some first class articles, opinions, and letters. Our mission is to bring occult and paranormal information to you in a straightforward and informative way. We have many great plans for upcoming issues and hope you will all stay with us during the growing pains that are sure to come over the next months!

One of the first pains we had was distribution! After sending to a test group we found that it was difficult for some people to open the newsletter as an attachment to E-mail. So, for the time being we will be posting The Universal Messenger at this site and letting you know as subscribers when the new issue is posted. Somewhere down the line we hope that we will either be able to find a satisfactory way to attach to E-mail where everyone is able to open it easily or even turn this publication into a hard copy snail mailed issue. But, that is the future and this is now!!!

And right now we have some terrific reading material for you all to enjoy! Super articles on all sorts of occult information, book reviews, and even the beginning of a serialized book, The Pagan Path, are all in this issue. I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to your feedback and suggestions. Now, about that feedback: We welcome all differing opinions and suggestions. We will print as many differing opinions as we can that are presented in an informative and thoughtful way. Mean-spirited or flame material simply will not be printed and is not appreciated. We are all welcome to express our opinion on these matters, but not at the expense of the original writer.

Additionally, we are looking for more articles. Any occult or paranormal subject matter is acceptable for query. You can send all articles, letters to the editor, opinions, etc. to me at Vaudou@aol.com. I really look forward to hearing from you. Enjoy the newsletter!

A Book Review by Brandi Jasmine

Investing by the Stars: author, Henry Weingarten

Henry Weingarten has garnered amazingly positive press clippings over the past few years. Weingarten's combination of solid writing skills, astrological knowledge, stock market savvy and plain common sense has been winning over even hardened skeptics.

Investing by the Stars is a solidly fair book, pointing out the risks of astrological investing in realistic terms, in such a clear fashion that I intend to recommend the book to “debunker” mindset skeptics that I encounter in the future. Much of the resistance astrology faces today is the distorted notions skeptics have of astrologers’ claims, and Weingarten puts to rest many cliche'd notions in refreshingly clear language.

Investing by the Stars gives me real hope for the future of astrology as a profession. We need clear applications for our talents as astrologers, and the stock market is a natural. Performance can be based on overall results, in terms of dollars, rather than in nebulous terms of psychology and personal prediction. To quote a section of Investing by the Stars:

For example, Wall Street astrologer Arch Crawford's Crawford Perspectives, an astrological newsletter, was ranked No. 1 by many timing-tracking services. Marc Hulbert acknowledged it as one of the top-performing letters of the previous five years. In his Forbes column of September 11, 1995, he wrote:

"No, I am not festooning my office wall with astrological charts, nor staying up late nights with the works of Nostradamus, I am only saying that results are what counts, and since results are what Arch Crawford has produced, I will take him seriously - whatever I might think of astrology."

This is an extremely encouraging work, which seems to be positively received by the investment community as well as the astrological community. It is a practical introduction to both disciplines, combining them in a realistic manner, and presents them to the reader without jargon.

    THEY ARE HERE by Zephyr

Although I have been involved in various forms and stages of the occult, etc. for about half a century, I still wonder... Why haven'tI seen an UFO? Why haven't the little green men come to me and said in a munchkin-like voice, "We come in peace," or some such gobble? Or maybe, "We have to take your body for experimentation. Mwaaa, ha, ha, ha, haaaa...?" Actually the answer might be very simple - Why would such occur?

Why haven’t they come to devastate the earth, as in War of the Worlds or Independence Day? I'll tell you why: Either they aren't out there, or we are so insignificant that they don't know we are here (or care), or we haven’t been able to stir up enough trouble to cause them any consternation. Its a good possibility that we don’t have anything that they might want, including our planet, so why should they bother with us, that is, if they are even out there? And of course maybe they aren't out there, maybe earth is it, there ain't no more, "That's all, folks!" What do you think?

But actually, I have seen "aliens," and plenty of them. They cross our borders and take our jobs. They are alive and well on the X-Files, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Singled Out, and so forth. They are on TV, in the movies, and in our minds and imagination every time we read a book about them. They walk our streets dressed like the Transylvanians of The Rocky Horror Picture Show , Creatures of the Night; like the band , Marilyn Manson...characters from an Anne Rice novel. "Listen to them. Children of the Night. What music they make." So the aliens ARE real, and they are around us all the time, because for the average person, the norm, those people are alien, but only because the "norm" doesn't wish to understand them. They have permeated our society to such an extent that we accept their presence as easily as we accept the family pet.

The normal have become the abnormal, and the bizarre, strange and unique have become the order of the day. The inmates will soon be running the asylum [unless they already are, which may well be the case considering the state of the world]. And in all likelihood the asylum might be the better for it, for those who presently are in charge (us... and our corporate structures and political "friends") certainly have no sense of responsibility for anything or anyone except for number one, our/themselves.

We certainly need some guiding force to keep us from ourselves. And "aliens" may be the solution. Bring 'em on! I'm ready.

    SOLITARY PAGANS by A. Nonperson

By far the largest group of pagans that exist are those who do belong to a group. The solitary pagan who chooses to conduct what they see as their personal brand of their chosen path by far out number those who walk a path that is communal. While there are many reasons for such a chose the fact remains that by so choosing they have weakened the pagan community. In spite of the countless times new organizations have sprung up to “network pagans” few have ever enjoyed the support needed to be successful. This is directly related to the desire of many pagans to remain secretive and obscure. When those who believe that the mere existence of organizations for pagans resembles the religions that they have left and wish to in any way rejoin any form an organization that will demand unity in beliefs are added to the pagans who wish to remain within the background the numbers of those willing to stand up and assume responsibility are few. Mixed within those who have I higher degree of visibility are those who are not the best to represent the pagan community as a whole. The event sponsors whose soul aim is to profit and not to promote learning and understanding that lead to tolerance would be representatives of the latter group.

So why should any pagan care? We collectively live in a society that is based on the beliefs of one group and we are not a part of that group. The reason so many pagans which to have their beliefs kept secret is because we all know that what we believe can be a deterrent to our job and our social status. We are the outsiders who remain looking toward someone else to make it safe to believe as we do. There is strength in numbers and in many case the work done by networking organizations does not need to identify the members or the people involved. The time has come to step up and be counted. Pagans need to seek out the organizations that are best suited to their individual needs and become active. The balance of the world is organized and we stand as fragmented as we where twenty years ago. The issues of ego and fear cannot be allowed to cause the isolation of any pagan because if we allow that to happen we remain vulnerable as individuals and suffer the fate as dealt by those who wish to see us fail in everything we do.

How important is this issue? In modern times there has never been a greater need for unity. We are the once that are by and large closest the needs and will of nature. We understand oppression and religions denial perhaps better then any group. We understand the need for tolerance as it was intended where the USA was first conceived. The world we live in needs us more then we need to feel safe. Take the time to seek out ways to held develop networking and help organizations the are beginning to make our world a better place for pagans.

A MEDITATION EXERCISE by The Manatee

MEDITATION ONE: THE DOT WITHIN THE CIRCLE/SPHERE

    1. The Point, or Position: A point may be unspecified, undefined. Therefore it may be as small as nothing and/or/yet as large as infinity. Undefined, it may be both at the same time from the point of view of an observer. If it is so large that it is all infinity then it is an area.
    2. The Universe, or Area: An area may be unspecified, undefined. As such, it may be as small as nothing and/or/yet as large as infinity. It may be both at the same time, as it is undefined. If it is as small as nothing, then it becomes a point.
    3. Time: An area and/or a point may exist for such an infinitesimally small instant that it is not there, and it may exist for all time, unto the ages and the ages, if its time line is not delineated. Thus, it may exist as both never and forever simultaneously everywhere in the undefined universe if it is a point, or as the undefined universe if it is an area, both point and area being essentially the same thing.
    4. Location: A point within an unspecified or undefined area is a point within infinity. If the area is undefined, then the location of that point could be anywhere, but anywhere cannot be located in an undefined area nor can it be located due to its very definition. Therefore anywhere becomes everywhere, and that point then is not only anywhere but everywhere all at once. The point becomes infinity itself.
    5. Separation: A point, then, may be so small for such a short period of time that it isn’t there and it will still qualify as a point. An area may be so great that it is infinite and eternal, and it still qualifies as an area. The point may be extended dimensionally to become the area and the area may be contracted to become the point. Each retains its own separate entity, though, for if the point is to be a point it must be condensed and for the area to be the area it must remain expanded.
    6. The Same: Even though each (the point, the area) may be defined by its own description as in 4, above, according to 2 and 3 each can be either eternal and infinite or totally nonexistent, and both may be both together at the same time. An item, or rather an entity, according to the above, can be either nothing or all and it can be either one or the other or both if it is undefined and unspecified. Within this unlimiting condition it is not either one or the other, but both simultaneously, filling the exact same space, everywhere and nowhere, at exactly the same time, never and forever.
    7. The Joining: So, the point is the area and the area is the point. They are different, they are the same. One is all, all is one. They are one. All is all. One is one. All. One.
    8. Repeat: Read back over this, from 1 to 6, then read it all again, and again and again. Ponder it. Juggle it back and forth in your mind. Turn it, roll it, revolve it over and over. Read it again while imaging it. Be it. Close your eyes and picture it. See it from a distance. Enter it. Expand it. Ride its surface. Be its core. Keep doing so. Visualize it any way you can. Do this for fifteen minutes or so, then sit quietly and become it.

    PART I

Whatsoever you so ardently so desire,
    Sincerely believe in, vividly imagine,
    and enthusiastically act upon,
    Must inevitably come to pass.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD, the mystic world of the Pagan, The world of magic, mystery, and Nature. What is this thing called magic? The word magic means manipulating and controlling Nature by supernatural means, communicating with unseen forces and putting them to work. Do not confuse the word magic with the stage illusionist or conjurer-this is Not magic. These unseen forces have been known to man since the beginning of time, and will be until the end of time. They cannot be captured and catalogued by physical science, for the simple reason they are not physical, they belong to the mind and the unseen realms of Creation; they are the ultimate reality. They are free of the bond of time and space - they are everywhere.

They belong to the fourth dimension, the side we cannot see but know exists. Who are the people who can manipulate these forces? This is the question not so easily answered. They are the so-called pagans, witches, magicians, occultists or whatever you wish to call those who have found the secret and the knowledge, it matters not.

Do you believe in the magic of the unseen worlds? - I hope so because it can be unwise not to. Do you believe in life after death and reincarnation, premonition, or luck? Do you believe in dreams or the predictions of astrology? You may deny this or say “no”, and yet millions of people all over the world, even so-called skeptics read their horoscopes in the daily newspapers and magazines. Do you believe in prophecy or believe there is order and genius in the Universe? Do you believe in Heaven and Hell?

The Universe is populated with unseen forces and unexplained happenings, which permit all these things, tangible and intangible both visible and invisible. Things we feel and things we sense, the natural and the supernatural. If you are interested this far, then come with me into the world of the supernatural phenomena, the world of these so called mysterious people, the pagans, sorcerers, witches, oracles, and seers, into the unfathomable world of the unknown. The world of these powerful and unseen forces that guide our destiny and our way of life. All these forces combine to make an unbroken circle - The Magic Circle itself - the Ancient and perfect Symbol of Magic the perfect mystery without beginning and without end.

Magic is real, although I prefer to call it The OLD RELIGION - older than Jehovah, the god of the Christian faith. Yes, the Old Religion is still alive and always has been, alive for thirty or more centuries, before the first syllable of recorded time. Hecate, the Pagan Goddess of the Moon, a mysterious Goddess having power over the earth, Heaven, sea, and the underworld - dark province of magic. She was first mentioned in literature by Theses, the Greek poet who wrote, "The Beginnings of the World and the Birth of the Gods"; he wrote of Hecate eight centuries before the birth of Jesus, and how many centuries old was she then?

The Egyptian Book of the Dead is filled with magic instructions, charms and spells, which were written between 3000 and 5000 B.C. The greatest alchemist, magician and wizard of all time was Solomon -he became the legendary figure dominating the practice of magic for centuries to come, not only in the biblical lands but throughout the world. It is thought he drew his power from these unknown forces, for he worshipped Astarte - Goddess of Love, fertility and lust.

It must be noted that one important factor is the connection between women and the mystic worlds. The Moon in her three aspects Luna, Diana, and Hecate, the ancient deity of some pagan beliefs is a Goddess. Woman by her nature is a creature of enchantment by her fineness of intuition, the cunningness of her wiles. She is always a priestess. She, not man, is the Mother of Fancy, the Mother of the Gods. She possesses glimpses of second sight, her spirit has wings to soar into infinity of longing and imagination. She is quiet, she is gentle, often a beautiful enchanting sorceress and not an old crone as you are led to believe.

The charming, pretty little housewife who may live next door could be a Pagan or a witch; who knows - so beware. The High Priestess of the Old Religion is the personification of the Goddess, she is looked up to by the members of her coven: Her word is law. The High Priest is her chosen Consort and gives obeisance to her. Women are the POSITIVE FORCE and men are the NEGATIVE, this is a Law of Nature.

So you want to be a Pagan or a Seeker after the Truth! Are you prepared to undertake the greatest adventure of all among the invisible forces, to learn the ancient secrets of the Old Religion. So let us look more deeply into the meaning of Paganism, Witchcraft, magic or occult phenomena, or to be more precise, the Old Religion.

It must be understood that all religions are no more than man's search for a power coming from above that can help him on his path through life. Every man is engaged in this search for power, either material or spiritual, whether he realizes it or not. The great mystic truths which constitute religion are too tremendous to be contained in any one creed. No religious order has monopoly of these, revelation cannot be confined to any one faith, book, or person. Religion is a very personal thing; no two person’s spiritual needs are the same.

There are many ways of spiritual development to suit all needs, for spiritual consciousness is the essence of mysticism and religion. As there is a science of the material so there is a science of the spiritual. The first science of those wishing to aspire to a practical worker for the "Higher Forces" is the knowledge of men. Second, the application of the Brotherhood of men. Thirdly. "To Know, To Dare, To Will, and to Keep Silent," these are the basics of advanced spiritual work. It must be a universal consciousness to all ways of thought, and when you can do this you will then be able to unleash the current of force which has been in check by the mind.

This force is a Cosmic current which flows through all things in the form of Light, Color and Sound. It is perpetual vibration, the force which moves by given laws, and which by the power of the mind you can control and direct. Knowledge is power, and we must first get this power. If you are able to fulfill all the forgoing requirements: I would ask this question of you,"Tell me what thou desireth and I will tell you what you are worth." The only acceptable answer to this would be "I desire to know in order to serve" and by this you must not be limited by any ordinance to one religion, but may bring gold from Ophir or cedar from Lebanon, as to suit your purpose.

The Great Book of Cosmic Wisdom has many pages, and each page must bemastered and its knowledge absorbed and inscribed upon the Soul's eternal consciousness. You are only permitted to turn it page by page - it has limitless pages, you can never read it through one lifetime. Much wisdom is acquired during sleep, When you think in terms of time, you cannot conceive Eternity. There is a sense where present time does not exist, but there is also a sense where only the present exists. The present is the invisible point between past and future. What was the future less than a moment ago is now receding into the past. In fact it ceased to exist the moment it came into being. The nothing, or nothingness, the Now is all the time that there is.

The future exists only in the imagination, the past only exists in the memory. This Now is all the time that you have, ever had and will ever have. Have you ever stopped to think this? It is often said, "I will leave it until tomorrow", but of course there is no tomorrow. It may have meant that you intended to help someone in some way, but who knows that within a split second from now you may cease to exist on Earth. It is happening at every moment, and amongst there there were some who put off the deed until tomorrow which did not come.

Think on these things and remember that "THIS IS ALL THE TIME YOU HAVE." Tomorrow is a look ahead - yesterday is a glance back - these are mere thoughts, memories, and hopes. This NOW must be the point where TIME and ETERNITY touch, because they are never ceasing - everlasting - like the mystic forces: The MAGIC CIRCLE.

    To Be Continued.

LETTERS, QUESTIONS, OPINIONS, and OTHER STUFF!

Here is the section where you will find excerpts from subscribers' letters, opinions, and questions writers have posed. Please feel free to join in this forum.

    What About Astrology?

I have been interested in astrology off and on for quite some time, but due to the fact that no one has been able to explain it clearly in a reasonable fashion I have always been put off. Can anyone explain to me why and how it works, but use rational, logical explanations? Please don’t come up with some flighty air-headed etherial language that is illogically thought out. Give me something that is concrete and makes perfect sense in a way that anyone can understand. Also, please use plain, everyday english.

I have found nothing useful in books. For instance, statements like, "the stars influence our earthly affairs," means nothing to me, and my answer to that would be, "Yeah. Sure." In what way and manner do they? How and why is this so, if it really is so? All I have gotten in the past is the stating of supposed effects in vague generalities with no clarification of real, solid cause(s) for said effects. These are some representative examples of the gobbledeegook I have gotten: “You’ll have to experience it to understand it,” which is the double-talk of the phoney; and “How it happens is unimportant, its the result that counts,” is concealing ignorance. The real questions beg to be answered.

Thank you. I would appreciate an answer either to be published here or E-mail me.

    Comments and Opinions
    An opinion from Oliver:

As you asked for opinions, here they are. I am glad you are offering a general newsletter, one on all aspects of magick and spirituality.

I do think you should include things such like chakras, astral projection, they are important, also many "standard" religions as they do have things to say and are not all dogmatic and useless. I think, to hold the interest of people with differing view points, like myself for instance, you should try and link other religions/spiritual traditions together. I don’t think it would be wise to say, out right, things like “paganism is very similar to christianity”. This tends to be a bad idea as people, myself included, get locked into narrow viewpoints, tunnel vision if you will.

When they get like this comments like the above offend both parties, despite the similarities between the two religions. I have a theory that all religion etc. see a slice of the whole divinity none seeing all. It was nicked (my theory) from someone else but they were quite clever. The thing is depending on your perspective you see the same thing a different way to someone else who is looking from another angle. Hence the different religions, different views of the same divinity. The divinity is probably something within and without us but not both at the same time.

Totally confusing, I don't claim to understand it myself. That is what I am looking for, understanding. The trouble I found with conventional religions was the lack of understanding and the need for faith. I need proof, personal conviction, not faith. How about you?

    The Universal Messenger. U.M.
Pronounced "Yoo ehm," as well as "Oom."
Some thoughts by our talented logo creator and artist, Zephyr

The latter, "Oom," could be a simple mystical mantra that raises one's consciousness to one or another state, but really it is the grand magical name of the foot which that made the footprint of our (this) journal's seal or logotype, a right footprint appearing as a left sole (not soul) surmounted by or rather implanted between two wings.

By the pronunciation of the FULL mantra of "hee-OOM-an," the footprint and therefore the foot is made known to all who see it or call it's source. The former pronouncement has two parts. "Yoo," which indicates to, or toward YOU, by the sound of the the word. You, to whom the foot and its wondrous print belong, you DO receive the Universal Messenger, by the fact that you ARE reading this right now. "Ehm" has no other significance to us than that it is a printer's measure, the width of the letter "M" is, and that may definitely be construed by you as a symbol of journalism, and this that you read IS a record, a journal.

It is also possible, if you consider it carefully, that the "UM," the initials of our marvelous journal, stand for "Your Mama," but that will be covered in another issue, possibly, and then again, possibly not. Then it could be the very mystical word, "Uhm...," simplified to "Uh...," containing the greatest secret of all secrets, hidden within this clarification: "I don't know," indicating that it certainly IS occult.--Zephyr.

    A Closing Note from Sam

That's it for our first issue! I hope you have enjoyed it and I look forward to hearing all of your comments and suggestions for the upcoming issues.
